John Marzano was a South Philadelphia native and hometown hero. From college star, to major league catcher, and finally as an analyst, his career was successful and rich. But more than his career was his connection to the neighborhood he grew up in, and never left behind. Referred to endearingly by his community and family as Johnny Marz his memory will be honored forever. The John Marzano Halfball Tournament presented by Conestoga Bank is a way to remember his legacy with one of his favorite pass times.
Halfball is a street game special to Philadelphians. Played in close quarters, halfball provides the excitement of baseball without breaking windows of neighboring row houses.
Teams can enter this single elimination tournament for $100 with the proceeds benefiting the Marzano Family Education Fund and the Festival Production Fund. Bats and balls provided and each player receives a free Tournament Commemorative T-Shirt from Triple Play Sports.
Basic Rules:
The 9th Street Italian Market Festival is produced by the Center City Proprietors Foundation (CCPF), A 501 (c) (3) non-profit agency. The goal of the festival is to give the community the opportunity to hear great music, sample delicious foods and regale in a celebration of Italian culture, while promoting the Italian Markets charm history and tradition as a destination for all to enjoy.
